  • DESCRIPTION: A scarce large scale, 9 sheet map of Australia by Augustus Petermann. <br><br> This map of Australia was cutting edge for the period, noting towns, river system, railways, telegraph lines and county boundaries. The map features the routes taken by a number of important overland explorers, during a time period when the interior parts of Australia were still largely unknown. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights with annotations on vegetation.<br><br> August Heinrich Petermann 1822-1878<br><br> Petermann was a German born draughtsman and cartographer. In 1845 he moved to Edinburgh to work with Alexander Keith Johnston. In 1847, he relocated to London where he worked on maps for himself as well as others. He became an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and in 1868 he was awarded the RGS Founders Medal. On his return to Germany in 1854, he joined the Justus Perthes publishing company in Gotha where he produced the Petermann’s Geographische Mittheilungen…. Petermann became an world-renowned expert on the geography of the Arctic, Central Africa and Australia.
