DESCRIPTION: Engraved by E. Wellmore from a painting by G. Stuart in possession of G.M. Dallas Esqr. <br><br> Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800) was an American politician and merchant from Pennsylvania. He served as a delegate in the Continental Congress (1774-1775), was the third President of the Continental Congress (1783-1784), Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1785-1787), President of the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council (1788-1790) and was the first Governor of Pennsylvania (1790-1799).<br><br> Mifflin resigned from his duties in the Continental Congress in 1775 in order to assist in the war effort. He was made a major and then an aide-de-camp of General George Washington. His role in the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton lead to him being promoted to major general.
