  • DESCRIPTION: Advertisement for Hunneman & Co., one of the country's most successful manufacturers of fire engines.<br><br> A highly ornate fire engine in front of the Merchants Exchange on State St. in Boston. Known as Engine No.547 or the "St.Louis," it was commissioned by the St.Louis Fire Co. and delivered to them in June 1855. In 1859, the St.Louis was sold to the town of Belleville, Illinois.<BR><BR> At the time of this print, Hunneman & Co. was on Hunneman St. near the Boston-Roxbury line.<BR><BR> Hunneman & Company was originally founded in Boston in 1792 and was renowned for its hand-pumped apparatus. In 1866, the company built its first steam engine and continued to make a variety of fire engines until 1883.
