  • DESCRIPTION: Below the title are listed the details of these four races, such as purse amounts and times. The trotter "Princess" was the toast of San Francisco during the heyday of the Gold Rush. This series of races in the summer of 1859 ignited the imaginations and purse strings of betters all over the east coast. Flora Temple won three of the four matches, breaking the world's record for the mile heat. These two trotters subsequently toured the country, drawing enormous audiences. Princess, however, never beat Flora Temple again.
