DESCRIPTION: John Mix Stanley (1814-1872), an important painter of Indians and survey artist, accompanied Isaac I. Stevens on a reconnaissance expedition of America's northwest. This view was plate 47 of the U. S. Pacific Railroad Expedition & Surveys - 47th & 49th Parallels - General Report. Stevens had become the first governor of Washington Territory in 1853. He led this survey in the hope that the first transcontinental railroad link would serve his new territory - linking the Great Lakes to the Puget Sound. However, this ambitiousness caused a serious war with the local Indian tribes. His railroad link would not become a reality until the completion of the Great Northern Railroad in 1893. Kettle Falls lies at the junction of the Kettle and Columbia Rivers in northeastern Washington State.
