  • DESCRIPTION: Samuel Mc Gowan served in South Carolina's state legislature before the outbreak of the Civil War. As Brigadier General he commanded at the attack on Fort Sumter. Mc Gowan saw action at many important conflicts, including the first and second Bull Runs, the battles of Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. He returned to a political career after the South's surrender.
