  • DESCRIPTION: This hand-colored mezzotint and line engraving was published in 1854. It was engraved by Samuel Sartain after the painting by Christian Schussele. Engraved for presentation to the Subscribers of the Art Union of Philadelphia in 1854. This winter scene of boys sledding is one of Schussele's most light-hearted genre paintings. Christian Schussele (1824-79) was born in Alsace, France. He studied at the Strasbourg Academy from 1840 to 1842 and then in Paris under Paul Delaroche. In 1848, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Philadelphia. The Sartain family popularized his work through their prints, thereby enabling Schussele to concentrate on painting full time.
