A beautiful example of Jodocus Hondius' classic map of China and Japan with insular Korea. It is one of the most finely engraved early maps relating to the Far East. The outline for this map is based on the Ortelius-Teixeira map of 1595. Japan as well as the northern island of Luzon is shown. Korea is shown as an island. A wind-powered sailing wagon is shown on the left. On the right is a vignette displaying the Japanese method of capital punishment by crucifixion. This map first appeared in 1606 in the updated and expanded edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. French text on verso. Maps
