The Bridges. [Venice]

  • ARTIST: Donald Shaw MacLaughlan

  • MEDIUM: Etching,

    DATE: 1910.

  • EDITION SIZE: Image size 5 1/2 x 4" (13.8 x 10.1 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: This etching is a bit of a whimsical view, placing two areas of Venice in closer proximity than they really are. Looking south-east, in the midground is the Bridge of Sighs. If one were to stand in this exact location, they would be greeted with the expansive Grand Canal just beyond the Ponte della Paglia (the bridge with figures on it). Instead, Maclaughlan has brought the islands of San Giorgio Maggiore closer to the viewer. The island's iconic Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, with its Greek columns, can be seen as if it lay just beyond the two bridges.
