One of the few non-coastal American maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, the famed French hydrographer commissioned by the King of France to map the known coasts and ports of the world for the French navy. From Bellin's Le Petit Atlas Maritime, Paris, 1747-64. In addition to charting the Mississippi River between the Iberville River and the Yazoo, this map shows the Red River to Natchitoches, as well as the road to Adayes, the Spanish Presidio of Texas. A legend describes the river as filled with crocodiles and with ferocious beasts such as bears and tigers along its banks. Maps
