  • DESCRIPTION: This foundation map of Japan first appeared in atlas form in Ortelius' Additamentum V of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or Atlas of the whole world. Ortelius based this map on the manuscript by Luis Teieira of Portugal. Three European galleons and two decorative cartouches adorn this important map. Korea is shown as an elongated island. <br><br>
