  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by Dequevauviller. (Sinking of the two boats, the Port des Francais - Atlas trip – La Pérouse, 1797) La Perouse set sail from France in 1785 to continue the discoveries of Captain Cook. His ships reached the west coast of Alaska in 1786 and he was able to do extensive mapping of the North American west coast from Alaska to Monterey, California. This engraving shows the sinking of two rowboats off of the Port des Francais (today known as Lituya Bay in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska). 21 men from the La Perouse expedition perished in the strong tidal currents while exploring the inlet. Both of La Perouse's flagships were shipwrecked in 1788, in the South Pacific. Fortunately, before he set sail, Captain Cook sent the valuable written details of his expedition to Paris where they were published posthumously in 1797.
