DESCRIPTION: Launched in 1797 she was one of six vessels commissioned by the Naval Act of 1794. She was given her name “Constitution” by President George Washington. The war ship is a heavy three masted frigate and is still officially listed in active service in the United States Navy, making it the oldest commissioned naval vessel in the world. She got her nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 in the engagement with the HMS Guerriere. Her thick and dense wood on her sides caused most cannon shots to bounce harmlessly, while the shots from the Constitution were doing considerable damage to the Guerriere. During the War of 1812 she defeated five British warships - HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant. Today this famous vessel is located in Boston, Massachusetts, the city where it was built.
