  • DESCRIPTION: This map, in the Jodocus Hondius version, was the first derivative of the very important John Smith Map of Virginia of 1612. Jodocus Hondius first issued this map in 1618. Blaeu purchased the copper plate of this map in 1629-30, and changed the imprint to "ex officina Guiljelmi Blaeuw." In the upper left corner is an image the great Indian chief Powhatan surrounded by his subjects. In the upper right is the British Royal Arms, below that is an image of an Indian warrior armed with a bow and war club. One of the great maps of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay.
