DESCRIPTION: Thos. Hudson pinxt. P. Dawe fecit. This striking portrait is a fine scratched proof impression of Dawe’s superb mezzotint of Sir Charles Hardy. As was customary at the period, Hardy is pictured in front of a Naval battle representing his victory over the French and Spanish fleets. Hardy was considered one of Britain’s most venerated Naval commanders, serving in Georgia and Carolina where he protected the British sea trade against Spanish privateers. After August Keppel’s retirement, he was placed in command of the Channel Fleet and in 1755 was appointed Governor of New York. He played a decisive role in the attack on Louisbourg and successfully deterred a dangerous invasion attempt by the French and Spanish fleets. Alternate state i/iii with title in scratch letters.
