He obtained considerable eminence with his numerous writings and experiments, and was regarded as one of the premiere medical minds on his age. Educated in Aberdeen, he received his medical training at Edinburgh University. In 1759 he taught a course of lectures on chemistry and medicine in London and continued to teach for nearly thirty years. He was a physician at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London and a fellow of the Royal Society.
