  • DESCRIPTION: John Howard Payne (1791-1852) was one of the early stars of the American stage. Born in New York City he was the son of William Payne a noted elocution teacher. Payne was one of the first American actors to invade the British stage. He produced his own plays at the Sadler’s Wells theatre in London, and wrote many works which were widely acclaimed. He collaborated with Washington Irving on Charles the Second; or, The Merry Monarch, and Richelieu: A Domestic Tragedy. His most celebrated work was Clari, the Maid of Milan, which was first performed in Covent Garden in 1823.
