  • DESCRIPTION: An important early map of the American Midwest, depicting an area from Lake Michigan to the Rocky Mountains. This map "is in reality Major Stephen Long's map" according to Wheat. "Arkansa" encompasses most of present day Oklahoma. Missouri and Illinois are shown in their final forms. "Wisconsin annexed to Michigan" which is essentially Wisconsin and part of Minnesota, extends to the Mississippi River. Part of Texas, which is west of "Arkansa" and south of the Arkansas River, is noted only as "Spanish Territory." The large expanse of land west of Missouri and the Mississippi River is left unnamed. The Missouri River is shown as far north as Fort Mandan. Many interesting notes. The area between the Platte and Canadian Rivers is named "Great Desert," and just south of the Platte River is the note: "The Great Desert is Frequented by roving bands of Indians who have no fixed place of residence but roam from place to place in quest of game."
