Colonel Faulkner was touring the state with several local politicians. One day near Boston Mountain, the party approached a squatter for information of the route. A very nice description of the story is recorded in Harry T. Peters, "America on Stone," pp. 121-124. The gist of the story is that the squatter, who is fiddling the first part of a tune over and over again and not answering any of Faulkners questions until Faulkner takes the fiddle and completes the tune whereupon he and his companions are made welcome.
