  • ARTIST: Marc Lescarbot

  • MEDIUM: Copper plate engraving,

    DATE: 1612

  • EDITION SIZE: Sheet size 6 7/16 x 8 1/4" (164 x 208 mm)

  • DESCRIPTION: This very rare map appeared in "Histoire de la Nouvelle-France" by Marc Lescarbot. This map shows the coast and interior portions of current day South Carolina and Georgia from just below "Cap Francois" to "Port Royal" where the city of "Charlefort" is noted. On the interior portions are shown several misconceptions including two large lakes and a series of mountains named "Palassi" where gold, silver and copper are to be found. This work was one of the first published histories of the French settlements in America. Although the majority of this "Histoire" dealt with the settlements in present day Canada, a section of this work described the French attempt under Jean Ribaut and Rene Loudonniere to found a Huguenot colony in the southeast which was accompanied by this map. Although the complete work was issued in 1609, 1611, 1612, 1617 and 1618, this map did not appear until the 1612 and subsequent editions. This map is rarely seen on the market. No copies have been listed Jolly or Rosenthal and we have no records of ever handling this before.
