In the upper central right is the title cartouche which surrounds the seal of the state of Virginia. In the upper left corner is a 4 1/2 x 7-inch "View of Capitol Square Richmond, VA." Below the view is a list of the railroads, a scale of miles, and a reference key. This map was advertised in the "Southern Illustrated News," October 18, 1862, p. 8, c. 4. "Valuable Military Publications, Published by West & Johnston, 145 Main St., Richmond. A New Map of Virginia, containing all the Counties, principal Towns, Railroads, Telegraph Lines, Rivers, Canals and all other internal Improvements. This is the best Map of the State ever published. We have spared no expense to make it perfect. It is gotten up on the best map paper, made expressly for us to print this map upon. Size, 26 by 36 inches, bound in pocket form, in beautifully illustrated covers. Price 2.50." The map is considered to be rare. There are likely several reasons for it rarity. First, it was a relatively expensive map for the common citizen or soldier. Second, the paper used was not of the best quality and was likely produced locally from inferior pulp. At the time, most paper manufactures were in the north. Third, The southern climate is not conducive for long term survival. Fourth, the City of Richmond was burned at the end of the war which likely destroyed any remaining stockpiles.
