This impressive plate is a wonderful example of Chatelain’s elegant engravings. Included in the 1720 edition of Atlas Historique, published by Chatelain in Amsterdam, this large chart is the fifth plate in volume two. This striking sheet includes two maps of Germany and two vignettes depicting pagan worship in ancient Germany. The large inset map at the bottom of the sheet covers the whole of Germany and includes the sites of many battles as well as the principal towns and cities. The locations of various ancient German tribes are included, as are the principal states connected with each tribe. The smaller map at the top of the sheet depicts Germany at the time of the Roman occupation. This highly detailed plate is a wonderful example from Chatelain’s important text. Maps
