Brown cut his silhouettes from life and then added details to the scene that were connected to the distinguished citizen's persona. <br><br> Thomas Hart "Old Bullion" Benton (1782-1856) was an American Senator (1821-1851) who supported westward expansion. He was a respected politician and played an important role in numerous national debates, including the use of hard money (coin based currency, rather than greenbacks, paper money).
