DESCRIPTION: From the PORTRAIT GALLERY OF DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN CITIZENS. Brown cut his silhouettes from life and then added details to the scene that were connected to the distinguished citizen's persona. <BR><BR> Samuel Lewis Southard was the son of Henry Southard and brother of Isaac Southard. He was a Senator from New Jersey and was born in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, N.J., June 9, 1787. He graduated from Princeton College in 1804.
