  • DESCRIPTION: A scarce smaller sized wall map of the United States shown in the decade before the Civil War. The west shows interesting early state and territory configurations. It has a large Nebraska Territory, a tall double high Indian Territory (current day Oklahoma). Utah and New Mexico are shown as large oversized east-west oriented territories. Also noted are the various rail and steam ship routes from the East Coast to California. Includes a chart showing 1850 population of the United States by state. Inset maps include a small double-hemisphere world map and a map of the West Indies. Steam and clipper ship vignettes add a decorative element to the map. The map is surrounded by a 1 1/2" repetitive scrollwork pattern. Drawn and Engraved by J. M. Atwood.

  • CONDITION: Condition: The map has several cracks and splits and minor areas of paper repair. It has been professionally restored with new linen and silk edging. Overall it is in good condition for a wall map of the period. Original outline hand coloring.
