He was born in Zurich, Switzerland and arrived in Philadelphia in 1832, where he lived briefly making a few lithographic images, he then traveled up and down the Mississippi and Missouri rivers doing views of the western villages. He died in Davenport, Iowa and was buried on the banks of the river he documented with paintings and prints.
