DESCRIPTION: Painted by J. W. Carmichael. Engraved by Charles Mottram. Fine seascape depicting a variety of ships weathering stormy seas off Portland, on England’s Dorset coast. One of Portland's bustling stone quarries is seen in the background. Portland limestone has been emplyed since the days of the Roman Empire and used throughout the British Isles, notably in major public buildings in London such as St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.
