  • DESCRIPTION: Two-part map of the Pacific Ocean by La Perouse, Atlas map no. 67. This map extends from Korea, Japan, and the Philippines to Monterey, California. In 1785 a French scientific expedition under the command of Comte de Jean Francois Galoup la Perouse set out with two ships, "Boussole" and "Astrolabe," to circumnavigate the world. A great deal of mapping was performed in the Pacific Northwest, California coastline and Pacific basin in general of which this fine chart of Monterey Bay is one. The voyage turned out to be destined to an unfortunate fate. La Perouse stopped in Botany Bay, Australia, where he left letters and his journals. The ships left for France and were never heard from again. In 1826 the remains of the two vessels were found on an island north of the New Hebrides. See Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America.... by Henry R. Wagner, pp.199-201.
