  • DESCRIPTION: The map appeared in "The Continuation of Mr. Rapin de Thoyras's History of England" by Nicolas Tindal. An beautiful, delicately engraved aerial plan of the city. Roads and canals going to the city are depicted. Four hornworks are shown surrounding the city. Hornworks were fort-like structures made up of a bastion front, two half-bastions, and two long sides called 'branches'. It served to enclose areas adjacent to citadels and form an additional layer of defense.
