• DESCRIPTION: This print is one from a series of privately published lithographs of a trip to the Kansas prairies in 1866 by the English nobleman Thomas Arthur Joseph Southwell, 4th Viscount Southwell (1836-1878). Sothwell and a party of friends visited the Kansas prairie lands in 1864. In circa 1867 he had a series of lithographs printed by the London firm of Vincent Brooks Day & Son after drawings that were made during the trip. It was not recorded who the artist was or even the exact number of images that were produced in the series. One records note six, another eight, and even speculation that sixteen plates or more titles were produced. One early dealer catalog list recorded eight titles, they are: 1. Great Bend of Arkansaw River. (Arapehoe Camp) 2. Saline Camp and Phantom City. (Kansas) 3. Gang of Elk. (Saline River). 4. Buffalo Creek. 5. Paradise Creek. (Sunday Evening Service). 6. North Forks of Solomon. (Indians). 7. Little Raven's Tent. 8. Buffalo Hunt, Oct. 18th, 1866. (Solomon and Saline Divide). 9. Fort Riley. The supposed title for the series was: Collection of tinted Lithographed Plates of Indians, Sporting, and Hunting Scenes in Kansas and on the Arkansaw River, etc. Any of the prints from this series are very seldom seen in the market today. Paradise Creek is known simply as Paradise and is located in Russell County, Kansas.
