Both were drawn by James Rentone, an eyewitness. The top plan depicts the English attack, led by Admiral Edward Vernon, on the Spanish stronghold at Porto Bello in 1739. A key identifies both the individual ships involved and major sites ashore. The bird’s eye view includes a key identifying the English ships (in the foreground), places the Spanish ships off Porto Bello, and names sites and batteries on land. The English victory at Porto Bello greatly weakened Spanish domination of the Caribbean basin.
