DESCRIPTION: This map is from the atlas “Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum,” Louvain, 1597 (-1611), which was the first atlas devoted solely to the Americas, as well as one of the first to provide details on the individual regions of the New World. The map is one of only two Caribbean maps in the atlas. Wytfliet’s Cuba map locates Havana and Matanzas, as well as other coastal and inland cities. Below, the map shows Jamaica and part of Hispaniola. A large title cartouche fills the lower ocean.
