  • DESCRIPTION: A detailed map from "Atlas of Long Island, New York. From recent and actual surveys and records." Many land owners names are given. College Point was named for St. Paul's College, founded by the Rev. Augustus Muhlenberg in 1835. Although the college closed around 1850, the name remained. It was founded by Conrad Poppenhusen, who made his fortune by manufacturing rubber combs. He began the community as a place for his workers and became a large benefactor to many of the public institutions such as the churches, libraries, and schools. The first free kindergarten in America was one of the results of his efforts and contributions.
