  • ARTIST: F. W. Beers

  • PUBLISHER: Published by Beers, Comstock & Cline, New York.

  • MEDIUM: Hand colored engraving.

    DATE: 1873.

  • EDITION SIZE: Paper size 15 1/2 x 23 3/4" (34.6 x 60.5 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: A detailed and nicely colored map from "Atlas of Long Island, New York. From recent and actual surveys and records." Many land owners names are given. The name 'Hempstead' may come from Hemel Hempstead, England, or Heemstede, in the Netherlands. Another suggestion is that it originated from a law in colonial times that required all farmers in the town to alternate their crops yearly, growing their cash crop one year and then growing hemp the next to replenish and re-nourish the soil.
