This fine view is one from the deluxe edition of "Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition." A medium folio sized series of ten images that were sold either bound (uncolored) or, loosely in a portfolio. Those that came in the portfolio were mounted on heaver card stock and were printed in color and in some cases enhanced by hand. While both editions are rare, the deluxe is far more so. William Heine was the "official" artist for Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. Printed on chine-colle (china paper attached to a heavier supporting sheet.) 18th-19th Century Subjects , Town Views - Asia , Japan
