Coast of North America from Point Judith to Cape St. Antonio. (Island of Cuba) Including the Bahama Banks.

  • ARTIST: E & G. W. Blunt

  • MEDIUM: Rolled multi-sheet engraving.

    DATE: 1853 (1855).

  • EDITION SIZE: Size: 28 1/2 x 129" (72.4 x 327.6 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: A very fine example of a blue-back sea chart of the eastern American coast. This chart covers an area from Narragansett Bay to the western end of Cuba. Inset charts include New York Harbor; Absecum Shoals; Frying Pan Shoals; Hatteras Shoals; Entrance into Winyaw Bay, Entrance to Smithville (near Cape Fear); Lewistown Bay; and Havana Harbor. Light houses, light ships and channel buoys colored in red and yellow. First issued in 1846 and was issued with new updates until 1869. Working sea charts are inherently rare due to the nature of their use aboard ships. Although likely common when first made, the vast majority of them were either destroyed by use or destroyed intentionally when new updated versions were obtained. The Blunt family is synonymous with chart making in America.
