  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by John Sartain for Sartain's Magazine. <br><br> Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador involved in the conquest of Central America and Peru. In 1539 de Soto and his men entered the United State via the state of Florida. After numerous conflicts with Native American tribes, de Soto fell ill and succumbed to a fever while in Louisiana. His men buried him in the Mississippi River before continuing on to Mexico.
