In their maddened despair women jumped overboard with their ofspring in their arms, and sank to rise no : more. Men followed their wives in frenzy, and were lost. Groups of men, women, and children, also precipitated themselves in the water, in the vain hope of self-preservation, but the waters closed over many of them for ever - Number of : persons on board: Steerage passenters, 322, First and second cabin 32, Captain and crew 42.
