  • DESCRIPTION: A good example of Magnus' Civil War map showing the 150 miles around Richmond. In the upper corners are two circular inset maps, Major General Canby's base of operations along the Mississippi and Red River area, and Major General W. T. Sherman's base of operations in northern Georgia. Below the central map are one large and ten smaller inset maps. The larger map shows the fortifications around Richmond. The smaller insets show prominent battle grounds that occurred between 1861 and 1864. They are: Bethel, Bull Run, Winchester, Fair Oaks, Seven days' battles, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Mt. Crawford, and Monocacy. ). Also included are portraits of Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. This map was a commercial success and was issued in at least 13 editions. The present edition is the earliest identified by Stephenson.
