  • DESCRIPTION: This view looks up California Street past Montgomery Street. In the middle of the street is a steam-powered trolley. On the right are the Parrott Building and St. Mary's Cathedral, to the left is Grace Church. In the background is Nob Hill. Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-1868) was a German born artist. He studied under Wilhelm Krause and later in Paris. In 1843 he won a silver medal at the Paris Salon. In the early 1860's he travelled the world, visiting the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam, Macao, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan and the United States. During his travels he made watercolors of many of the places he visited. Many of these watercolors were published c.1864 in Berlin by R. Wagner as chromolithographs. The original watercolors from the voyage were exhibited in London in 1866 and at an exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1868.
