He is holding a small writing implement in one hand and a book in the other. <br><br> Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a popular Scottish playwright, poet and historical novelist. Works by him include "The Lady of The Lake," "The Bride of Lammermoor" and "Ivanhoe." Despite his enormous popularity Scott died in poverty. The financial crash of 1825-26 left him bankrupt, but the man, filled with honor and dignity, refused to declare himself in such a state and did not wish to collect donations from his fans, which included the King. Instead Scott continued to write, determined to earn his way out of poverty. He never succeeded in life, but the continued sales of his works after eventually payed off the debt.
