Mauritz F. H. de Haas

1832-1895

Maurits Frederik Hendrik de Haas was a Dutch-American marine painter. He received his formal art education at the Rotterdam Academy and The Hague before traveling to London, where he lived from 1851-1852. He began working as an artist in the Dutch Navy in 1857, and remained the position until 1859 when he immigrated to the United States. His maritime paintings depict a great expanse of North America (from the Bay of Fundy to New Orleans) with many of them focused on Long Island.
