Alfredo Zalce

1908-2003

Alfredo Zalce was a Mexican artist, born in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. He grew up in an artistic family, with both his parents working as photographers. At the age of 20, he had his first major break - his work was exhibited in Seville, Spain. Two years later, he founded Escuela de Pintura y Escultura (School of Painting) in Taxco.

Zalce painted a number of murals across Mexico and produced several print books, the most famous of which might be Estampas de Yucatán (1945). He accepted the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes (National Prize for Arts and Sciences) in 2001, after declining it twice in previous years.
