Francois-Auguste Biard

1799-1882

Francois-Auguste Biard was a French painter, printmaker and caricaturist, best known for his traveling adventures at the artistic rendering of them. He was an official portrait painter of the French court and was made the official painter for an expedition heading towards Spitsbergen in 1839. Over the course of his life, he traveled to such places as Brazil, where he ventured through the Amazon rainforest, the United States, Syria, Egypt, Malta, Cyprus, Greece and Spain.
