George Heriot

1759-1839

Born in Scotland in 1759, his ancestor of the same name was the goldsmith and philanthropist in the seventeenth-century. He traveled the West Indies in 1777 where he drew and wrote extensively. On his return in 1781 published “A Descriptive Poem, written in the West Indies.” He traveled to Canada in 1792. Little is known of this first trip to Canada except that sketches around Montreal and Quebec do exist. He returned to England in 1796 traveling along hthe coast in Wales and spending time at the University of Edinburgh. Returning to Canada he served for a time as the deputy postmaster for British North America in 1799. He wrote two books on Canada “History of Canada from its first discovery” published in 1804, and “Travels through the Canadas” published in 1807, the later publication was illustrated by his drawings.
