Lute Pease

(1869-1963)

Lute Pease was born Lucius Curtis Pease in Winnemucca, Nevada. His parents died when he was five and he was raised by his grandparents in Vermont. He is one of the best know political satirist of the early 20th century. He worked in Alaska from 1897 to 1902. In 1905 he became editor-in-chief of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. In 1912 he married Nell McMullin and the couple decided to move back to the east coast. He became a political cartoonist for the Newark, Evening News a post he held until 1954. In 1948 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for political cartoon work. He was 79 at the time of the award making him the oldest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. His papers are at the Huntington Library in California.
