DESCRIPTION: Engraved by J. H. Young, F. Dankworth, E. Yeager, and E. F. Woodward. This is one of the most important states of Mitchell's "Reference and Distance" map of the United States. First published in 1834, the 1846 issue is the first to include the large inset, "A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California." This inset map, also published separately, shows Texas with the "stovepipe" configuration extending up to the 42nd parallel, and the Oregon Territory reaching far into Canada. Other inset maps include the Vicinity of Albany, Vicinity of Baltimore, and Washington, Vicinity of Charleston, North part of Maine, and South part of Florida. Below the title is a beautiful engraving of a bald eagle holding a quiver of arrows and an olive branch riding a seashell across the Potomac River.. The U.S. Capitol Building is shown in the background.
