Italian Immigrants in New York.

  • ARTIST: Paul Frenzeny

  • PUBLISHER: Published by Harper's Weekly, New York, February 1, 1873.

  • MEDIUM: Hand colored wood engraving.

    DATE: 1873

  • EDITION SIZE: Image 9 1/8 x 13 1/2" (228 x 343 mm) plus title and margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: Two images sides by side: on the left "Plying the Old Trade in the New Country" and on the right "Taking to the American Style of Earning their Daily Bread" . The analogy implies that Italians earned their keep in the old country by begging and only learned the value of honest labor once they arrived in America. A barefaced example of the rampant stereotyping that impoverished immigrants endured upon their arrival in the "New World".
