Martin Schongauer (c.1450 - 1491) was a painter and printmaker. Few of his paintings have survived, though records suggest he was well sought after during his life time. His printmaking is what he is most known for today and historians consider him to be one of the finest engravers before Albrecht Durer. He is credited with bringing contrast and textures into print making, helping it rise out of the goldsmith industry where it had been primarily used.
