• DESCRIPTION: An important and highly accurate map of the Americas, first issued in 1763 by John Gibson and re-issued six times over a thirty-one year period with geographical updates, new titling and other revisions. Its various states depicted shifting political boundaries after the French and Indian War, and after the American Revolution with the independence of the new United States. This is the fifth state of the map, and one of the earlier charts showing the United States as a country separate from England, after the 1783 peace talks at Versailles.

The map is impressively detailed, especially in South and Central America and the eastern regions of North America. Western North America is more speculatively charted, and includes the imaginary Fou Sang colony in Canada. An inset table lists the regions and islands in the possession of different European countries, as well as the individual U.S. colonies. The attractive decorative title cartouche includes plants and an alligator.
